    Sworn translation of a criminal record certificate: what to know before ordering

    Which procedures need a translated criminal record certificate

    A foreign criminal record certificate (casier judiciaire, criminal record or police certificate, certificado de antecedentes penales, Führungszeugnis, cazier judiciar) is mostly used in Italy for:

    • Citizenship by marriage or by residence: the online application to the Ministry of the Interior, handled by the Prefettura, asks for the certificate from your country of origin and, if the Prefettura says so, from the other countries you have lived in, apostilled or legalised and translated into Italian.
    • Registration with a professional body or recognition of a profession: several professional orders ask for the certificate from the country where you practised, often with a certificate of good professional standing.
    • Work with minors or in sensitive sectors: some employers ask, in addition to the Italian certificate, for the one from the country where you lived before.

    Conversely, to use the Italian casellario certificate abroad, some countries require it to be sworn before an Italian court (asseverazione) and apostilled: we arrange this on quote.

    The right order: certificate, apostille, translation

    A certificate translated before the apostille has to be translated again. The order that saves you from starting over:

    • request the certificate when the rest of the file is almost ready;
    • have the apostille added, or consular legalisation if the country is not party to the Hague Convention;
    • upload it straight away: the translation arrives within 24-48 working hours and covers the apostille too.

    Certificates issued online, codes and QR

    Many countries now issue the certificate electronically, with a digital signature, a verification code or a QR code. The translation reproduces the code and the verification wording, and notes the QR code and the electronic signature, so the Italian office can check authenticity on the issuing authority's website. If the apostille is electronic too, we translate it from the PDF you downloaded. Wording such as "no record" or "néant" is rendered literally, without interpretation.

    Cost and what you receive

    25 € per page: a criminal record certificate is usually one page, plus one for the apostille if it is on a separate sheet. You receive by email the PDF signed and stamped by the translator; a paper copy by post is an option for offices that prefer it.

    The mistakes that block a citizenship application

    • Forgetting the certificate from another country you lived in, when the Prefettura asks for it, for example for study or work.
    • Uploading the certificate before the apostille or legalisation has been added, and having to get it translated twice.
    • Translating one page when the certificate has two, or when the second only carries the verification code: that page is translated too.

    FAQ

    Questions about this translation

    Do I need a translated certificate from every country I have lived in?
    It depends on what the Prefettura asks for: besides the certificate from your country of origin it may ask for those from the other countries you have lived in, each with its own apostille or legalisation and its own translation. Check the exact list with the competent Prefettura.
    My certificate was downloaded online with a QR code: can it be translated?
    Yes. We translate the downloaded PDF, including the verification wording and code, and note the QR code and electronic signature. The Italian office can then check the document on the issuing authority's website.
    The certificate only says "no record": does it still need translating?
    Yes, the Italian office must be able to read the standard wording too, the authority's heading, your personal details and the apostille. The wording is rendered literally, as in the original.
    Does the certificate need the apostille before translation?
    Yes, for citizenship the apostille or consular legalisation goes on the original before translation, and is translated together with the certificate. If the office also wants a consular stamp on the translation, write to us: it is quoted separately.
    The certificate has a second page with only the verification code: does it need translating?
    Yes, every page of the certificate is translated, including the one with the verification code, because that is what lets the office check its authenticity. We confirm the number of pages before starting.
