Sworn translation of a court judgment or judicial document

A foreign divorce, adoption or name-change judgment only takes effect in Italian records once registered, and the Comune wants it translated, together with proof that it is final. We translate judgments and court orders in full, using the legal terminology of the country of origin.

    What this translation is for

Sworn translation of a court judgment or judicial document: what to know before ordering

Where a translated foreign judgment is filed

    • Comune, civil registry office: registration of a judgment of divorce, annulment of marriage, adoption or correction of name concerning an Italian citizen, filed directly or via the consulate.
    • Italian court: a foreign judgment produced in proceedings on separation, custody, maintenance or inheritance.
    • Prefettura: in a citizenship application, if the criminal record shows a conviction, the judgment may also be requested.
    • Lawyers and law firms: court and legal documents, pleadings and expert reports (perizie) to be filed in proceedings, translated with legal value.

Do not forget the certificate that the judgment is final

For registration the Comune needs to know the judgment is final, meaning no longer open to appeal. Many foreign courts certify this in a separate document or with a stamp on the copy: it must be translated too, or the procedure stalls. Upload the judgment and the certificate in the same order.

How a legal text is translated

The translator renders the court heading, the parties, the operative part, the reasoning, signatures, stamps, case number and any enforcement wording. Foreign legal institutions keep their own name, with a short note where useful, rather than being replaced by an Italian institution with different effects. Agreements attached to and referred to in the operative part, such as a child custody agreement, are part of the translation if you upload them.

    When an asseverazione is needed

For a judgment to be produced in proceedings before an Italian judge, your lawyer will tell you whether a sworn translation is enough or whether it must be sworn before an Italian court (asseverazione). The same applies to an Italian judgment to be used abroad. We arrange asseverazione on quote.

    Price

25 € per page. Judgments are often long: upload the complete document and we confirm the number of pages, total and delivery date before starting. Signed and stamped PDF by email; paper copy by post optional.

Common mistakes with a foreign judgment

    • Translating the judgment without the certificate that it is final.
    • Translating only the operative part when the Comune or the judge wants the full judgment.
    • Forgetting the attached agreements it refers to, such as those on child custody.

    FAQ

    Questions about this translation

Where is a foreign divorce judgment filed?
With the Comune's civil registry office, directly or via the Italian consulate in the country where it was granted. Ask the Comune for its document list: usually the full judgment, the certificate that it is final, the apostille or legalisation and the translation.
Do I also need to translate the certificate that the judgment is final?
Yes. Without proof that the judgment is final the Comune will not register it. Whether it is a separate document or a stamp on the copy, it is translated together with the judgment.
Is a sworn translation enough for proceedings in Italy?
It depends on the judge and the proceedings: in many cases the lawyer asks for the translation to be sworn before an Italian court (asseverazione). Ask before ordering; asseverazione is quoted separately.
The judgment is thirty pages long: what does it cost?
The price is per page, so the total depends on the length. Upload the complete judgment: we confirm pages, total and delivery date before starting, because a long text can take more than the standard 24-48 hours.
Can I have only the operative part of the judgment translated?
Usually not: for registration the Comune wants the full judgment, and a judge also looks at the reasoning. Ask the office what it wants before ordering a partial translation.
Do you also translate Italian judgments for use abroad?
Yes, from Italian into English, French, Spanish, German, Romanian or Arabic. If the destination country asks for asseverazione before an Italian court and an apostille, we arrange both on quote.
