    Sworn translation of an academic transcript: what to know before ordering

    What a translated transcript is used for

    • University enrolment: together with the diploma, the university assesses your studies from the transcript. For a master's degree it checks the curricular requirements, meaning credits in specific fields.
    • Recognition of exams and shortened programmes: if you started your studies abroad and continue them in Italy, the course committee decides which exams to recognise by comparing course titles, credits and often the syllabi.
    • CIMEA statement or declaration of value: describing the qualification usually also requires the exams taken.
    • Professional recognition: for some regulated professions, for example in healthcare, the ministry compares your studies with the Italian programme, including hours of placement.
    • PhDs and scholarships: calls often ask for the transcript with the grade average.

    Grades and credits: how they are rendered

    The translator does not convert grades: an A, a 4.0 out of 5, a 16/20 or a "sehr gut" stay as in the original, and the legend of the grading scale is translated so the university can interpret them. Conversion to the Italian 30-point scale is done by the Italian university. The same goes for credits: ECTS, credit hours or teaching hours are given as they are. Course titles are translated faithfully; course codes, exam dates and stamps stay in place, page by page.

    Syllabi and long documents

    For recognition of exams many committees also ask for the course syllabi. You can have them translated with the same service: upload all the files in one order and we confirm the number of pages and the delivery date before starting. A three-year transcript often runs to two to four pages.

    Many universities accept transcripts in English, French or Spanish without translation: check the call for applications before ordering.

    Common mistakes with a transcript

    • Forgetting the page with the grading legend, often printed on the back: without it the university cannot read the grades.
    • Uploading only the pages with passed exams, when the official transcript has more.
    • Converting grades to the 30-point scale yourself and asking for the conversion to be translated: the translation only gives the original.
    • For recognition of exams, filing the transcript without the syllabi the committee asked for.

    Questions about this translation

    Are grades converted into the Italian system?
    No. Grades stay as in the original and the grading scale printed on the transcript is translated. Conversion to the 30 or 110 scale is for the Italian university assessing the application.
    Do I also need to translate the course syllabi?
    If you are asking for recognition of exams or of a profession, often yes: the committee compares the content. You can upload them in the same order as the transcript; we confirm pages and total before starting.
    The transcript has several pages: how is the price calculated?
    Every page with text counts as one page. Enter the number of pages of the document in the order; if you are not sure, upload the file and we confirm the total before starting.
    Does the transcript also need an apostille?
    Often yes, like the diploma, if the university asks for legalised documents. It goes on the original before translation. Some universities accept a transcript verified through CIMEA: check the call for applications.
    The grading legend is on the back: does it need translating?

    Can I have only some exams on the transcript translated?
