    What this translation is for

    Sworn translation of a driving licence: what to know before ordering

    The two situations that need a translation

    To drive during your first year of residence. Article 135 of the Italian Highway Code allows holders of a licence issued outside the European Union to drive for up to one year after registering their residence, if the licence is valid and accompanied by an international driving permit or an official translation into Italian. The year runs from residence registration, not from arrival.

    To convert it at the Motorizzazione civile. After one year a foreign licence is no longer enough: it can be converted without tests only if the issuing country has a reciprocity agreement with Italy, otherwise you need an Italian licence. For licences from some states the Motorizzazione asks for a translation, together with form TT2112, the medical check and, for non-EU citizens, the residence permit. Licences from EU countries need neither translation nor conversion.

    Which translation your office accepts

    The Ministry treats as official a translation made by the issuing country's consulate, by the Italian consulate in that country or by an authorised official translator. Practice varies from office to office, and several offices also ask, for some countries, for a consular certificate of validity. Before ordering, ask your Motorizzazione which form it accepts: if it wants the consulate's translation, you do not need ours.

    What we translate, front and back

    • name, date and place of birth, licence number, issuing authority, dates of issue and expiry;
    • the categories (A, B, C, D and subcategories) with their validity dates;
    • the codes and restrictions, for example corrective lenses or automatic transmission only;
    • stamps, signatures and the wording on the back.

    Names in Arabic script are written as in your passport, if you give it in the order.

    Cost, and a copy to keep in the car

    25 € per page: a card licence, front and back, is usually one page. You receive the signed and stamped PDF by email within 24-48 working hours. If you drive during the first year with the translation, it is worth adding the paper copy by post and keeping it with the licence for roadside checks.

    Mistakes that cost a fine or a rejected application

    • Driving on a foreign licence with a translation after the first year of residence: the translation does not extend the deadline.
    • Translating only the front of the card, when the categories and codes are on the back.
    • Applying to convert a licence obtained after registering residence in Italy: it cannot be converted.
    • Going to the Motorizzazione without the consular certificate of validity, when the office asks for it for your country.

    FAQ

    Questions about this translation

    How long can I drive in Italy with a translated foreign licence?
    With a valid non-EU licence, for up to one year after registering your residence in Italy, accompanied by an international driving permit or an official translation. After that year you need to convert it or get an Italian licence.
    Can my licence be converted?
    Only if the issuing country has a reciprocity agreement with Italy and the licence was obtained before you took up residence. The list of countries is published by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and changes often: check it before starting.
    Does the Motorizzazione accept your translation?
    It depends on the office and on the country of the licence: some accept a sworn translator's translation, others want the consulate's or a translation sworn in Italy (asseverazione). Ask your office before ordering; for asseverazione write to us, it is quoted separately.
    Do I have to translate the back of the licence too?
    Yes, the official translation is complete: the back often carries the categories, validity dates and restriction codes. Upload a legible photo or scan of both sides.
    My licence is from an EU country: do I need a translation?
    No. A licence issued in an EU or EEA country is valid in Italy without translation and without compulsory conversion, subject to Italian rules on validity and medical checks.
    Does an international driving permit replace the translation?
    For driving during the first year of residence, yes: Article 135 of the Highway Code accepts either the international permit or an official translation. For conversion, ask the Motorizzazione which document it wants.
