From English into Italian: foreign documents for Italian procedures

A document in English issued in the United Kingdom, the United States, Ireland, India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ghana or the Philippines has to be submitted in Italian when it goes to a Comune, a Prefettura, a Questura or a university. The most common cases are the birth certificate for citizenship or registration, the criminal record (police certificate) for work and residence permits, the degree certificate with the transcript of records for university enrolment, and the driving licence to be converted.

The legal basis is article 33 of Presidential Decree 445/2000: a document issued abroad is submitted with an Italian translation certified as conforming to the foreign text by an official translator or by the consulate. Before translation, the original usually needs an apostille from the country that issued it: in the United States the apostille comes from the state that issued the record, in the United Kingdom from the Legalisation Office of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Upload the apostille page too: it is translated together with the document. For an Irish record, as for any public document from a European Union country, Regulation (EU) 2016/1191 removes the need for an apostille.

From Italian into English: Italian documents for use abroad

We also translate the other way: birth or marriage certificates for a visa, diploma and transcript for a master's degree abroad, criminal record for a job in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia or Canada, bank statements and payslips for a rental. Here the rules are set by the destination country: some authorities accept a sworn translation in PDF, others ask for their own form, for example an asseverazione before an Italian court followed by an apostille. Ask the foreign authority what it accepts; if an asseverazione is needed, we arrange it on quote.

Frequently asked questions

Is a "certified translation" the same as a sworn translation?

In English-speaking countries a "certified translation" is a translation accompanied by the translator's statement. Our sworn translation always includes it: signature, stamp and statement of fidelity to the document received, by official translators sworn and certified at the Courts of Appeal. If the foreign authority asks for something more, tell us before you order.
